Sensei’s Key Quotes

Four Rules For a Good Life
1) Show Up
2) Pay Attention
3) Be Honest (with yourself and others)
4) Focus on what you are doing not of the end result

“Insults can’t be given, they can only be taken.”

“One cut, one life.” - famous Bushido saying

“Cut with power, not with strength.”

“Relax.”

“In Everything there is a Balance.  Our task is to find that balance.”

“Movement in stillness; stillness in movement.”

“Imagine an opponent. The enemy is only the stuff within you that you want to cut away.”

“Be calm, not lazy.”

“The difference between you and me is twenty years of practice.”
- commentary by Campbell sensei:
When you encounter someone who appears to  be far beyond your skill you can become discouraged.  This is especially true if the person appears to be less fit or strong than you.  But remember, Kendo (and Iaido) take many years to perfect and great skill has very little to do with strength or speed; rather it is about experience and spiritual strength.  But the promise hidden in this saying is that you too will gain great skill and be able “do magic”.  All it takes is twenty years of good practice.

But try not to think of this as a competition.  If you study to try and catch your senior you should always be disappointed because your senior is studying too.  By the time you catch them they should have moved on.

Ultimately, your challange should be to exceed yourself - to always be seeking a chance to improve.  This way you will be a credit to yourself, your dojo, your Art, and your students.

“To get yourself out of a hole, first stop digging.”

“Good for nothing is good for everything”

“Hold your sword back, but always hold your sword”

“Cross shinais, make a friend.”
- from a story told by Campbell-sensei:
“When I first met Haga-sensei (hanshi hachidan in both kendo and iaido) he held out his hand and pointed his index finger at me.  My sensei encouraged me to do the same.  Then Haga-sensei crossed my fingertip with his, held it for a moment, and then opened his hand, took my hand and shook it.  He says that crossing shinais with someone (practicing with them) is a good way to make a friend.  I have often thought about that meeting and try to remember that kendo is about making friends and building community as much as about hitting your opponent.”

“Control your Anger; don’t let it control you.  When foucused properly it is a very powerful tool.”

“Everything in moderation; even moderation.”

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”

“When you think you are tired, you have only used up 40% of your energy - there is 60% left!”

“You are expected to become tired.” -
Campbell-sensei’s commentary:
You must push yourself in order to improve.  If you only do what you can you will never learn to do what you cannot.

“It is normal, almost healthy to shoulder stress once in a while. But being under stress for a long period of time is very harmful - even deadly.”

“You are who you think you are.”
